Charleston, SC- State Senator Marlon Kimpson (D), announces Michelle Mapp as this year’s recipient of the Marjorie Amos-Frazier Pacesetter Award.  Kimpson, chair of the selection committee, will present the award to Mapp at a special ceremony, 4:30 p.m., Thursday, December 15, at Charleston County Council chambers, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston.  Mapp is CEO of the South Carolina Community Loan Fund [SCCLF].  The ceremony, open to the public, will precede the 5 p.m. start of Council’s regular meeting.

West Ashley Democrats created the award in 2010 immediately following the passing of Amos-Frazier, who was the first woman elected to Charleston County Council in 1974, and the first woman, black and non-legislator elected to the SC Public Service Commission in 1980.

The award is presented annually to a recipient for their lasting civic and humanitarian contributions without regard to political affiliation. “Michelle’s many achievements help engineer our economy through her work in the expansion of affordable housing and community business enterprises,” Kimpson said. “She is a force for renaissance change and growth in our community.”
