Taking care of others is a passion for Lydell Gray. For the past 20 years, the Navy veteran has provided the Upstate community with in-home nursing care, medical transportation, and adult daycare as the owner of Samaritan Bed and Bath Service.
"I look around my community and can see that there are so many people in need of help,” said Lydell, who has been in the medical field since 1995. “It’s not something that I choose to just ignore. I want to do my part and help people out.” In order to meet the expanding needs of the growing population of the intellectually challenged adults and seniors in the region, Lydell plans to expand his Black-owned business into a new community, Pickens, South Carolina. “I’m always looking for ways to expand my services into other areas that need it,” he said.
Samaritan Bed and Bath Service's Pickens location will be in a building once used by the American Red Cross. South Carolina Community Loan Fund (SCCLF) provided $400,000 in financing for the building's renovations. Once renovated, the building will serve as a mixed-use development. It will offer services in adult day care, senior transportation, general adult services, and assisting intellectually challenged and disabled adults and seniors with addressing basic needs.
“I will always find a way to help out if there is a need,” said Lydell.
